Last month’s Book Club Was Better event was one for the books, and not just because of the amazing vendors and vibes. It also happened to fall on what turned out to be the hottest day Houston has had so far this year. With not a cloud in the sky and temps officially hitting 101° and climbing even higher on concrete, the market left many of us - vendors, guests, and organizers alike - completely drained.
After seeing how hard the heat hit everyone (and personally recovering from a migraine and dehydration), I had to take a step back and ask: is this still safe? Is this still fun?
The answer was clear: we need to prioritize care.
So, for August’s edition of The Book Club Was Better, I’m making a few changes:
❌ The Vendor Market is Canceled
With extreme heat likely to continue through August, I’ve decided to cancel the vendor market portion of the event. It’s not a decision I take lightly, especially knowing how much time, creativity, and energy vendors put into these pop-ups. But I can’t in good conscience ask anyone to spend hours outside in that kind of weather.
✅ The Movie Night is Still On
That said, we’ll still be gathering for the book club part of the night and we'll hope you join us at 8 PM on Wednesday, August 27 at Social Beer Garden. This month we've chosen Silver Linings Playbook by Matthew Quick as our book-to-film adaptation, and we'll hold our meeting after the sun goes down and it cools off a bit.
Even though there won’t be a full market, you’re still welcome to come hang out. Bring a friend, grab a drink, and enjoy an evening together under the stars. A few vendors may still choose to pop up independently, but there won’t be an officially organized market this time.
August is Wellness Month
And that feels especially timely. Wellness isn’t just yoga and smoothies - it’s also knowing when to rest, when to adapt, and when to choose sustainability over hustle. It’s also about showing up for each other in ways that feel good, safe, and nourishing.
That’s why we’re still holding space for the movie night. Because sometimes being in community with like-minded, book loving individuals in a shared space, with no pressure and no expectations, is exactly the kind of wellness we need.
Thank you for being part of this growing, evolving little community of readers, creatives, and small business lovers.
